Designer and developer of web interfaces Dustin Curtis wrote an amazing article on How to Hack Your Brain through sleep. Suggesting multiple naps or polyphasic sleep versus one extended sleep period (Monophasic Sleep) Curtis believes you can shave up to six hours off your sleep time. During the night a typical person only spends one to two hours achieving REM (rapid eye movement), the most beneficial sleep stage. Seen below, a regular eight hour sleep pattern attracts only four occurrences of REM, with the remaining time providing little value to a person’s overall rest time.

Below are a number of Curtis’ suggested sleeping patterns that cut out the majority of ‘useless’ sleep time, maximising REM periods and gaining around four to five hours of extra ‘wake’ time.

These sleeping methods are obviously not for every lifestyle, but for those with a rigorous workload – and a bed-ready workspace, Polyphasic sleep may be the key to boosting productivity.
